Is tulum a safe location? What security measures do we adopt in our hotel?

Is tulum a safe location? What security measures do we adopt in our hotel?

If you’re looking for a fun, beach holiday in Mexico, Tulum is a great option. With amazing beaches, majestic archaeological sites, great restaurants, luscious vegetation and a boho-chic atmosphere, Tulum is still one of the favorite beach destinations for tourists around the world.

However, it is known that in the past months Tulum has had an increase in violence when it comes to drug-gang related incidents and the local and state government have taken action to ensure the local population and tourist’s safety. This being said, Tulum still has a lower crime rate than NY, LA, Houston, Chicago, New Orleans or Detroit. Here is a current comparison chart between Tulum and New York’s safety and crime rates according to NUMBEO

As in any other vacation destination you travel to, you have to travel smart and stay safe. It is important to be aware of your surroundings, stay away from trouble, avoid drugs, staying out too late at night, wearing flashy jewelry and visiting non touristic areas. We recommend our guests to stay on the hotel strip and avoid certain areas in downtown Tulum.

We are a small boutique hotel in Tulum with a very personalized service during check in that allows us to know our guests by name and make sure all their needs are met. We have private security on our premises 24/7 that guard the main entrance as well as the beach. This is not because the beach strip is unsafe but to guarantee our guest’s privacy and tranquility by preventing street vendors or unregistered patrons entering our property.

In order to guarantee all of our guest’s privacy and safety, no outside guests are allowed on the hotel premises or rooms. Access is granted only to registered guests staying with us. If hotel guests wish to invite friends or family to come over, they are welcome to meet them at our restaurants Fresco’s or Ziggy’s, which are open to the public.

In case of a private event in our hotel or a wedding, depending on the number, external vendors or personal guests can access the premises, but only by notifying us in advance and specifying the number of people they wish to invite. Their full names are required in order to register them and grant them access.

Overall, Tulum is still beautiful and safer than many other popular vacation spots in the world. Come to Tulum, travel smart, stay safe and keep enjoying Mexico and all it has to offer.
